“What was the Industrial Revolution? — History in a Nutshell — Animated History”

This video summarizes the types of transformations that were happening in Britain during the Industrial Revolution between the 1700’s and 1900, where Britain was turned into a superpower of factories.  It explains how the industrial revolution was actually a “series” of revolutions that combined together during that era.

Following are points the video makes:

— New technologies of mechanization were developed at that time.

— New types of energy were used such as coal.

— New types of transportation was invented with canals, improved roads, and eventually steam engines on trains and ships.

— A consumer revolution happening where people started purchasing inexpensive mass-produced goods.

— Britain’s population grew from 6.5 million in 1750 to 10.5 million in 1800, and in 1850 it doubled to 20.8 million.

— An agricultural revolution happened with improved farming techniques.

— A commercial revolution happened with Britain exporting and importing more goods.

— A financial revolution happened where land owners were allowed to mortgage their land in order to raise money to invest in new ventures.

— The slave trade played a part, where slaves were brought to the Americas, with the crops grown using their labor being exported back to Britain.  Slavery was abolished in Britain’s colonies in 1834, but by 1860 the cotton industry in Britain was still dependent on cotton crops that were grown by slaves in the Americas.

— The gap between the rich and poor increased during that time, many skilled workers lost their job to machines, and overworked factory workers often faced dangerous conditions.

— Children as young and 8 years old were after put to work during that time.

— Towns and cities became breeding grounds for diseases, where people lived to be only 30-33 in urban areas, and 40-43 in the countryside.  Poor nutrition caused issues with the people.

— Eventually improvements were implemented such as free education, restriction on child welfare, improved sanitation, and better working conditions.

— Many working people were denied the right to vote during that period.
